VIRGIN FROM AN ALTARPIECE.
EARLY GOTHIC. NORTH OF FRANCE. End XIIth – beginning XIII CENTURY

Interesting wooden sculpture representing the Virgin and the Child. Coming from an early Gothic altarpiece in northern France, probably from Ile de France.
Although the sculpture has very typical characteristics of the Gothic style, such as the figure with the right knee bending, it preserves a rigid corporeal and facial expression both in the Virgin and in the Child, still reminiscent of the Romanesque style. It is therefore a gothic image of transition that still keeps some traits of the hieraticism of the Romanesque images.
The piece preserves its entirety and apparently with its original polychromy, on which stands out the layer of the Virgin, completely decorated with golden stars representing the night and the starred vault. The Boy brings on his left hand a ball and on the right hand an indeterminate object. Originally, the Virgin had an object in the right hand (probably a bouquet of flowers). This hand appears glued. It has cracks and some crank produced by over time. It has a modern wooden base in order to give it stability.
