Description
Ref. 540
VIRGIN OF PILAR.
GOTHIC. SPAIN OR CENTER OF EUROPE. End of s. XV.

Height (without crown): 38.5 cm
Height (with crown): 42 cm

Peculiar alabaster sculpture representing the Virgin of Pilar. The crown is made of brass, in a totally Gothic style.
In the art market there has been another sculpture of the Virgin of Pilar of this type, characterized by a whole religious symbolism related to mystical orders, perhaps like Rose-cross.
This sculpture, carved in one piece, has a good base. At the edge of the column there is a very well-worked rose-cross, where the rose that crosses it most stands out, and relates it to others where they are only represented by a simple X (like rose, without the cross). The column or pillar is completed by a rounded capital that represents “the eye of Providence” (the eye that sees everything), all surrounded by eyes. On top there is the representation of the Virgin of Pilar with the Child holding the characteristic bird in the left hand.
Another peculiarity of this sculpture is that their total sizes (without the crown but with the column) are the same as those of the original size of the Virgin of the pillar.
The sculpture was repaired at an undetermined age of several fractures, and the head of the Child lacks.

From private collection of Catalonia.
