“VERGINE SEDUTA CON BAMBINO”
CIRCLE OF ANDREA BRIOSCO “IL RICCIO”. PADUA (ITALY). About 1543.
Height: 78 cm
Width: 42 cm
Depth: 30 cm

Terracotta sculpture that is a copy of a famous piece of Andrea Briosco that is preserved in the Benedictine monastery of Santa Giustina de Pàdua. Andrea Briosco was called “Il Riccio” or “Andrea Riccio”, the greatest sculptor active at the end of the Quattrocento and the beginning of the Cinquecento between Padua and Venice. The famous sculpture, also in terracotta, is part of the so-called Florentine Classicism and is considered an outstanding work of the Renaissance Italian sculpture.
The work presented would be a copy of the original made by a sculptor from the circle of “Il Riccio” between 12 and 15 years after the original. It is a Virgin under whose feet it is registered the year it was made: 1543. At the figure of the Child it lacks a foot and to the Virgin it lacks part of the right arm (this arm on the original sculpture carries a book). It has undergone two restorations during its history, the first one made so long ago to repair some breaks and the second one today to consolidate the polychrome probably applied on the first intervention.

From private collection from North East France.
