Description
Ref. 530
GODDESS SNAKE-BIRD “NAGA”.
INDIA – NEPAL. S. XII-XVI.

Length: 25 cm

Important bronze sculpture representing, in an archaic manner and with little known iconography, the immortal Indian-Nepali goddess “Naga”, related to other deities such as Devi or Manasa, within the Hindu, Buddhist and Jainist cults.
The goddess, represented as a legendary creature, with a woman’s bust carrying a “kamandalu” for water (a symbol of ascetics and yogas) and with feet of a bird or “garuda” and body of snake, will be a lawyer for all aspects of life.
The sculpture is completely preserved and the cleaning to which it was subjected exposed several holes in the bronze due to oxidation over the years.

From private collection of London, acquired before 1975.

Price: 3,500 €
